MORE THAN $100,000 IN "TREASURES" TO BE WON Tens of Thousands of Players Expected To Participate in Internet Treasure Hunt (Washington, D.C. - - Oct. 18, 1996) -- The same week Americans take a day off to reflect back 300-400 years ago to explorers who were just discovering the new frontier, the Software Publishers Association (SPA) (http://www.spa.org), co-host Yahooligans! and ten other prominent companies, are gearing up for the exploration of a new frontier -- the World Wide Web. CyberSurfari '96, the Internet treasure hunt with a difference, is luring Cyber hunters and Cyber-hunting school teams from across the globe to search for and discover new places on the World Wide Web. With more than $100,000 in prizes, CyberSurfari is a fun and educational adventure both for the classroom and home. Enthusiasm from last year's CyberSurfari was so great, SPA started putting together clues for a new Internet treasure hunt almost immediately after CyberSurfari '95 came to a finish. This year, SPA has opened up the contest for international competition, and in April, added to its CyberSurfari Web site a virtual classroom with sample clues and lesson plans for teachers to warm-up their students' Web surfing skills. Comments from last year's players included:
"I really enjoyed the CyberSurfari '95 contest. Some of the clues were tricky and required some thought as well as some in-depth searching. It also led me to some sites that I will visit again. I must have added at least 20 new entries to my Hot List. I want to thank SPA as well as the clue sponsors and the outposts for conducting the contest. If you run it again next year, I'll be on board. Once again, thanks!"
"We felt like it was a good opportunity for these students to learn about the Internet and for us to learn more [about computers] as educators. The kids used deductive reasoning, logic and plain common sense to solve the riddles. I would like to incorporate the CyberSurfari contest into my curriculum next year." CyberSurfari '96 is a one-month Internet treasure hunt, running Tuesday Oct. 22 to Friday Nov. 22, 3 p.m. (EST). It is an international contest open to individual and school team surfers. To play, cyber hunters collect clues leading to specific pieces of information on the 100 "outpost" sites. These lists, or clue pages, provide links to exciting destinations all over the World Wide Web. Once the hunter gets to the outpost page, the detective work starts. The final answer to the clue will be in the form of a treasure code, which with one click of the mouse or return key, automatically registers the treasure code and its sender to the SPA. CyberSurfari's mission is to demonstrate the richness and abundance of information available on the Internet and concurrently show people how much fun it is to surf the Web. CyberSurfari registration is taking place now electronically on SPA's Web site, http://www.spa.org/cybersurfari. SPA is the leading trade association of the desktop software industry, representing the leading publishers as well as many start-up firms in the business, home office, consumer, education and entertainment markets. Its 1,200 members account for 85 percent of the sales of the U.S. packaged software industry. SPA press releases are available on SPA's Web site at http://www.spa.org or through fax on demand at (800) 637-6823.
