WEB REVIEW ONLINE MAGAZINE RESUMES PUBLICATION
THROUGH INNOVATIVE RELATIONSHIP
WITH MILLER FREEMAN, INC.

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. (September 24, 1996) With a renewed editorial focus on Web development and a potent, technical publishing relationship behind it, Web Review, the groundbreaking Web-based magazine, has resumed weekly publication at http://webreview.com. Songline Studios, publishers of Web Review, has formed a unique alliance with publisher Miller Freeman, Inc.'s Web Techniques print magazine and Web Design & Development conference & exhibition to serve the people who work on the Web through three complementary venues online, in print and in person.

Web Review brings timely information to readers online; Web Techniques offers in-depth technical and reference articles in the print magazine format; and the Web Design & Development conference is the place for professionals to meet, mingle and learn. Miller Freeman and Songline Studios' collaboration builds on each party's strengths to create unparalleled information, education and advertising resources for the professional Web development community.

"We're extremely happy to bring Web Review back, and we look forward to working with Miller Freeman," said Dale Dougherty, president of Songline Studios. "Their magazine and conferences are perfect complements to Web Review, and the two companies' editorial approach and commitment to customers are totally in synch."

One of the first entirely Web-based publications, Web Review was receiving an average of 5,000 visits each day and had developed a faithful following of thousands of readers when it ceased publication in May, 1996. Songline Studios president Dale Dougherty cited insufficient advertising revenues as the reason for suspending publication of the popular and respected online magazine.

Web Review, to be published each Friday, will remain strictly an electronic publication, able to deliver breaking news and features on what's new in Web development. Upcoming stories include a report on Onlive! Technologies' 3D voice-chat environment and a look at the VRML 2.0 specs. Microsoft will be the first sponsor of the new Web Review.

"Microsoft supports the goals of Web Review and this alliance because we're committed to helping Web professionals create today's hottest websites," said Brad Chase, vice president of developer relations and marketing in the Internet platform and tools division at Microsoft.

Web Review will regularly feature tutorials and columns from Web Techniques (http://www.webtechniques.com), the monthly print magazine for professionals who develop, design and maintain World Wide Web sites. With 37,000 paid subscribers, Web Techniques provides tips and techniques for web builders, including coverage of VRML, PERL and CGI, 3D animation and server maintenance.

"We are tremendously excited at the opportunities this alliance creates," says Manny Sawit, associate publisher of Web Techniques magazine. "Advertisers have expressed great interest in reaching the web professional community through all mediums, and our relationship with Web Review and Web Design & Development increases our overall visibility through increased content and cross-traffic."

Web Review will also feature interviews of speakers and editorial coverage based on the content and special events occurring at Web Design & Development conference & exhibition, including Web '96 (http://www.web96.com) in October in Washington, DC, and Web '97 in San Francisco next February. Web '96 and '97 explore the creation of truly interactive and useful websites and demonstrate the latest design techniques and new wave of programming tools that can be used to exploit this dynamic medium. Topics include Web Information Design, VRML, CGI, PERL, Java, Electronic Money, 4GLs, Server APIs, Interactive Copy, Public Key Encryption and Database Search and Retrieval Technology.

"Through Web Review we are giving our audience, the web professional community, access to our Web Design & Development's content before, during and after the live event," states Eric Faurot, director of Web Design & Development. "This community is growing quickly through networking and information flow, and our alliance will enhance the experiences and the opportunities online, in person and in print."
