COLLEGE BROADCAST AND ENCODING.COM
SIGN LONG-TERM DEAL TO ENABLE
INNOVATIVE ONLINE BROADCAST NETWORK

www.collegebroadcast.com to Launch
in September 1999

SEATTLE, WA - April 14, 1999 - encoding.com, a creator of digital media business solutions and a leading provider of Optimized audio and video encoding for the Internet, today announced an exclusive one-year agreement with College Broadcast, the leading provider of entertainment aimed at college students. encoding.com will provide a complete solution for the production and delivery of online audio and video to College Broadcast's online viewing audience.

www.encoding.com is enabling College Broadcast's mission to become the dominant post-convergence network specifically serving the college market by broadcasting high-quality entertainment content to students on college-owned cable TV and high-speed Internet. Under the terms of the agreement, encoding.com will assist in the September 1999 launch of College Broadcast's online broadcast network, encoding a variety of content for broadband delivery in both RealNetworks' Real Audio and Microsoft's Netshow. Content will include music videos and artist interviews, commercial and independent films, digital animation, comedy, sports, fashion, environmental and other news, and reviews and documentaries.

"www.encoding.com is focused exclusively on encoding and is the leading provider of audio and video digital media solutions. encoding.com's experience and expertise, coupled with a consultative approach to understanding and meeting client needs, ensures the highest-quality digital content for our clients," said Martin Tobias, encoding.com's minister of order and reason.

"www.encoding.com is critical to our ability to build an online broadcast network," said Chet Lyons, College Broadcast's CEO. "The first step we took was to partner with www.encoding.com because they understood our business needs, had mastered the technology, could manage the dynamics of the project, and could deliver. And it was www.encoding.com's ability to manage very large encoding projects that sealed the deal. With the quantity of content we're looking to deliver over the next 12 months and the tools needed to manage thousands of files that will require encoding, www.encoding.com was the obvious choice."

Lyons confirmed that the launch of College Broadcast's broadband site is timed to coincide with the start of the new school year. College Broadcast will use its existing audience of 1,025,000 cable-connected students to advertise and promote the launch. "Our existing cable audience gives us an enormous leg up in launching the site," said Lyons. "It also gives our advertisers a better deal because we can deliver their message with cross-reinforcing delivery systems. We have an extraordinary ability to create a 'word-of-mouth buzz' when they love what they see. Remember what it was like to live in a dorm? When you found something interesting, you shared it with friends, right? We've seen that happen with our cable content. Our cable and Internet distribution goes right into the dormitories, and cross-promotion creates a very powerful media platform for delivering an advertising message."

Lyons declined to discuss specific content. "Clearing content for Internet broadcast is tough, much harder than cable, and we don't want to spoil the surprise when we launch," he said. "But I can tell you something about the 'look and feel' of the Web site itself. Macromedia Flash gives it a seamless look with very fast graphic compilation. Combine that with an aspect ratio that hints of digital TV, and toss in streaming at 200 kp/s, and you have something that is way beyond what most people think can be done on today's Internet. The beauty of the college demographic - besides its tremendous value to advertisers - is that most kids living on campus are hooked up to the Web at T-1 or even higher speeds."

"College Broadcast's Web site is another example that bandwidth limitations are no longer an issue for delivering high-quality audio and video content over the Net," said Tobias of encoding.com. "Demand is surging for new Web content and will continue to grow as bandwidth increases and improves the audio and video experience for audiences like College Broadcast's."
